John Leonard scored three times, including the opener on a 1-on-1 move against Drew Commesso midway through the second period, as the Griffins beat the IceHogs 5-1 at Van Andel Arena on Sunday. Rockford thought it had answered on a second-period power play, but Gavin Hayes’ rebound goal was waved off.
Hawks prospect Hayes did get one that counted early in the third, his third of the season, with Jiri Felcman and Dylan Anhorn assisting, but William Lagesson restored the two-goal lead just 11 seconds later. Rockford drops to 1-5-0-0 and visits the Toronto Marlies next Saturday.
