Grand Rapids scored twice in 35 seconds early in the second period and added a 5-on-3 power-play goal from John Leonard to build a 3-0 lead at the BMO Center on Saturday night. Stanislav Berezhnoy kept Rockford in it with 14 first-period saves before the Griffins broke through.
Nick Lardis scored his first goal of the season on a Gavin Hayes setup midway through the third, and Brett Seney cashed a Hayes rebound three minutes later, but Leonard’s empty-netter sealed it. The IceHogs, now 1-4-0-0, visit Grand Rapids again Sunday afternoon.
